This is my hypo red tail Colombian boa constrictor and its cage setup.  I have a heating pad on the right side of the cage so it is not under the water, snakes don't like to drink warm water.  The heating lamp provides a basking spot and puts the heat in that side of the cage to about 90 Fahrenheit.  Several hiding spots and opportunities to climb are provided to the animal through the branches, logs, leaves, and the small tree decoration.  I feed it directly in the cage despite the common knowledge to take the animal out when feeding it so it does not become aggressive. However the animal remains docile even when my hands are in the cage, so feeding it directly in its habitat works for me.  It always has water and there is a humidity and temperature gauge in the cage.  However, you cannot not see the humidity gauge as it is behind the leaves.  The heat pad under the cage remains on at all times and the over-head heating lamp goes off when I sleep.  It is important to stimulate the animals natural environment, so turning off and on the light corresponds with the sun going up and down within a 24 hour period.  For a substrate or bedding, I choose mulch made for reptiles because it absorbs water decently and looks fine.  Caring for such an animal can be very easy compared to a dog or any other pet in the aspect that it only needs to be fed once a week as a juvenile and once every two weeks as an adult.

Introduction of ME!

Hi, my name is Andrew and I have been interested in the unprofessional field of herpetology since a very young age.  Herpetology is a specialized interest in reptiles which requires a very unique knowledge much larger then the average person, but not quite as large as a zoologist who has earned a degree in such a field.  Herpetology involves not only having knowledge on the basics of many reptiles, but how to house keep them and care for them by providing adequate housing and an environment.  I have a hypo red tail boa constrictor, my only reptile.  Due to my living situations and not owning my own place, I have been limited to one pet.  I have a wish list which will soon be posted showing what future animals I plan to obtain.  Also, a photo of my snake cage setup and the care I provide for it will be published soon.
